Which materials survive water, and which do not?
Fluoroelastomer sport bands are water resistant; FineWoven, Modern Buckle and stainless steel bands are not.
Water resistance is a material property, not a band-family property. Fluoroelastomer sport bands are described as water resistant, which makes them the practical choice for swimming, sweating and rinsing. FineWoven, Modern Buckle and stainless steel bands are not water resistant.
That split matters for care. A fluoroelastomer band can be rinsed and worn again quickly. A FineWoven band that soaks through will hold moisture in the weave. A Modern Buckle band combines leather-like materials with a metal clasp, and neither part benefits from repeated soaking. A stainless steel link bracelet is metal, but it is still listed as not water resistant as a band assembly.
Magnets are a separate concern. Bands that use magnets can interfere with the watch compass. If you rely on compass headings, choose a band without magnetic closures.
- Fluoroelastomer: water resistant, wipes and rinses clean.
- Nylon: woven textile, dries slower than fluoroelastomer, not described as water resistant.
- FineWoven: not water resistant, keeps moisture in the weave.
- Modern Buckle: not water resistant, combines soft material with a metal clasp.
- Stainless steel link: not water resistant as a band assembly.
